Ethernet over Copper ( EoC ) vs Broadband versus (bonded) T1
Ethernet over Copper versus (bonded) T1
Ethernet over Copper broadband (also abbreviated as EoC) offers dedicated internet access (DIA) with the same Service Level Agreement (SLA) as a T1 or bonded T1 line. Just like (bonded) t1s, it's bandwidth is not shared with other customers and the speed is also symmetrical (the same upload and download speed).
EoC is delivered over multiple pairs of twisted copper as a native Ethernet signal, hence the name Ethernet over Copper. One advantage over (bonded) T1 lines is that an EoC circuit does not require any expensive hardware (like a T1 router) on the customer premise, as the hand off is a standard Ethernet signal that can be hooked up to any router or gateway.
Additionally it is far easier to upgrade to a higher speed. Where upgrading a 3Mbps bonded T1 it would take the carrier weeks or months and involves new wiring and (sometimes) new equipment, with Ethernet over Copper upgrading to a higher bandwidth can be as simple as the carrier upgrading your plan and you're done.
Because of the technology used it is also much less expensive. A 10Mbps EoC circuit can be as low as $750, and a 2Mbps EoC around $250.

EoC Reliability
Ethernet over Copper circuits run on multiple pairs of copper. When one pair goes down, your circuit still stays up (though at a lower speed). Additionally, because far less equipment is needed at the local Central Office (CO), the change of carrier hardware failure is also reduced.
As stated earlier, EoC has a SLA similar to (bonded) T1 lines.
EoC Availability
XO Communications was one of the first to deploy Ethernet over Copper at 10Mbps speeds using Hatteras equipment. It's availability was somewhat limited and you had to be within a certain distance from an EoC-ready CO (1500ft).
Since then many carriers have been jumping on this more cost effective DIA solution and have been investing greatly. EoC is available in many markets nowadays across the United States.
